-
We ask that your communities invest in exercise equipment for each class, or at least the class type that you’ll be implementing.
Here are some recommendations for each class type:
Cognitive programs: Inflated beach balls, drums, drumsticks
Flexibility programs: Yoga mats, extra chairs, resistance bands or thin towels to aid in stretches
Resistance/Strength programs: Resistance bands and free weights. We see 1, 3, and 5 pound dumbbells used most often
Balance Programs: Yoga mats and stable chairs
-
If you have residents that are dependent on walkers or canes the balance and strength classes will be a great benefit! Unfortunately, due to lack of strength or previous falls, many seniors need a safe group environment to attempt being independent from those tools.
For individuals who are wheelchair bound, they can and will still be able to participate in most, if not all, classes with appropriate modifications. Too often these residents are overlooked when they can benefit the most.
If we can, we would move these members from wheelchair to a stable wooden or metal chair to allow their hips, knees, and spine to appropriately align outside of the wheelchairs ergonomically unsound positioning. If moving the member out of the wheelchair is out of the question, we just ask that you leave spare books or soft blocks lying around to elevate their hips.
-
It is strongly recommending that all residents participate in fitness programming 3-5 times per week to maintain the physical and psychological benefits of our programs.
With this in mind, our NASM certified instructors will provide Cardiovascular, Resistance, and Flexibility training in each class with a strong emphasis on the base of support to prevent falls
